Are you trying to install from the Ubuntu repository?
If not - what did you do?

Thank you.

I ask that because i dont know how to use bakefiles or makefiles ( i come from visual studio ).

i guess its something like g++ minimal.cpp -I include path -L library path

Re: this is embarassing but im trying to install wxGTK on ubuntu and i dont have configure

Patrick Geltinger

Like Vadim said, if you would simply follow the instructions given to you by Igor and me, you wouldn't have to know anything about Makefiles (you don't need to know anything about Bakefiles either way).

I'll explain the whole build process a last time:

You download wxWidgets-3.1.0.tar.bz2 and open a terminal in the directory which contains your downloaded file, and run the following:

# build wxWidgets
tar xfv wxWidgets-3.1.0.tar.bz2
cd wxWidgets-3.1.0
mkdir buildgtk
cd buildgtk
../configure
make
# build the menu sample
cd samples/menu
make
./menu

Again, the samples directory in which you should run make is *NOT* the samples/menu directory directly in wxWidgets-3.1.0, but the one in the build directory buildgtk!

Re: this is embarassing but im trying to install wxGTK on ubuntu and i dont have configure

Now i'm talking on how to build my own programs without makefiles because i can't write huge shell scripts
There must be a simpler way to build my programs like:

g++ parabola.cpp -o parabola -Iincludepath -Llibrarypath

Writing a makefile for a single program on a single target platform with
a single tool chain with a single build configuration is, guess what,
SIMPLE.

You start by defining variables, (which can be constructed
incrementally), for things like you Compiler and Linker commands,
(possibly with paths), their flags and settings, your and the tool
chains Include and Library location(s), etc. - there are conventions
used to make this a little more readable, e.g. CC is the normal name for
the C Compiler, CC_FLAGS for it's flags, etc.

You then define rules, (using those variables), for transforming files
with one extension &/or location to another, e.g.: to transform a .cpp
to a .o use the c++ compiler with the c++ complier flags and the include
paths, the .cpp filename and -o the resulting filename or to define a
set of .o files to a .exe use the linker, the linker flags & library
paths, the list of .o files and -o the exe name. The same can be applied
to static & dynamic libraries, (if you have any), manual pages, etc.

Once you have your transformation rules defined you also define specific
dependencies, either individually or generally e.g. flintstone.exe
depends on fred.o, wilma.o and pebbles.o + some entries pets.lib,
pets.lib depends on dino.o, etc. - this allows the make tool to work out
the dependency chain for them. You would normally add some rules for
abstract targets such as `clean`, `all`, etc.

One you have all of that defined the magic just happens with make.

You can also look at other build tools such as scons, http://scons.org/
rather than make.

The reason that the wx build has the additional abstraction of config,
and ends up with such massive make files, is because:

  - It has numerous possible build targets, (e.g. Static or Dynamic,
Unicode or ASCII, Single Massive or Lots of Little, Libraries all with
or without debug.
  - It may be being built for Windows 32 or 64, OS-X or just about any
Linux, Solaris, Unix, etc., etc.,
  - It may be being compiled & linked with gcc, of a number of different
generations, Visual Studio of a few different generations, several other
compilers & linkers.
  - The facilities offered by the tool chain may differ, even between
the same one at the same version on the same platform, depending on
system settings and installed libraries.
  - The requirements of the various underlying component libraries
differ so to provide a consistent UI wx tries to produce self drawn
components when being built in an environment where the required base
type is missing.

Of course your program probably doesn't need all of that so the bottom
line is that you should be able to get away with a simple make file.

Also Code::Blocks and Ankita are supposed to be able to generate a build infrastructure for you. never used them, though...

You need to use a backticks (`), not the apostrophe.

This is how you build the program on any Linux distro.

Thank you.

Re: this is embarassing but im trying to install wxGTK on ubuntu and i dont have configure

Gunter Königsmann
If I had to set it up I'd use cmake:

https://github.com/andrejv/wxmaxima/blob/master/src/CMakeLists.txt and https://github.com/andrejv/wxmaxima/blob/master/CMakeLists.txt vchool aren't too complicated even if they contain loads of features you don't need and that you will have to remove in order to make them work for you.

If you type in

   cmake

Cmake will find the files and will create all the Makefiles you need. Afterwards

  make

Builds your whole project. And code::blocks, apple's xcode, ms visual studio and eclipse can read CMakeLists.txt automatically setting up your project if you ever want to develop on a non-linux computer for whatever reason you might have to. Also wxMaxima will do all the maths you'll ever need ☺

Kind regards,

   Gunter.

Re: this is embarassing but im trying to install wxGTK on ubuntu and i dont have configure

Gunter Königsmann
Just place the CMakeLists.txt file I've attached to this mail in your
project's source directory.

Afterwards entering

   cmake .

will automatically generate the makefiles needed in order to compile
your project and

   make

will compile it.

Kind regards,

   Gunter.
